Inflation surges to 10-yr high
By Xin Zhiming
Updated: 2007-08-14 06:50

Surging food prices drove the consumer price index (CPI) to 5.6 percent
in July - the highest in a decade - the National Bureau of Statistics
(NBS) said yesterday.

But analysts remained confident that it will ease by the year end.

Food prices, which make up about a third of the inflation basket, rose
15.4 percent year on year last month.

Meat prices rocketed 45.2 percent, the highest among all food products.
Egg and edible oil prices increased by more than 30 percent year on year.

However, non-food prices rose only 0.9 percent.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, remained low at
0.7 percent in the first half of this year, according to the NBS.

"The CPI growth in July is a bit surprising," said Zhu Baoliang, chief
economist with the State Information Center.

Many economists forecast that it would rise by around 5 percent after it
hit 4.4 percent in June.

The government has taken a slew of measures, such as encouraging pig
raising and checking price cartels, to increase food supply and curb
prices.

"Price rises are set to slow but it will take some time for those
measures to show their effect", Zhu told China Daily.

Chen Xingdong, chief economist of BNP Paribas Peregrine Securities, said
prices will not stop rising until November.

If the price rises spill over into the industrial sector and lead to
price hikes of industrial products, the situation will become much more
serious, as it will indicate a more general inflationary trend, Chen
warned.

For the whole year, the CPI is bound to break the central bank benchmark
of 3 percent, he said, adding: "Our study shows it may be about 3.7
percent."

Many economists have forecast it will be close to 4 percent.

One or two hikes in the interest rate are widely expected given rising
consumer prices and other key economic indicators.

But Zhu said the rate increases, which are quite possible, will not ease
price rises.

"Price rises of grain (used as animal feed) have remained stable and
therefore it is not rising costs, but a growing supply-demand gap of food
products that has pushed up the price index," Zhu said.

Interest rate hikes will not dampen demand for food, he added.

He said rising inflation has pushed the real interest rate - the
benchmark one-year deposit rate is 3.33 percent - into negative territory.

News of the pregnancy was first reported on People magazine's Web site on

outlets picking up the story the following day.

Burton, 48, and Bonham Carter, 41, met during the filming of the 2001
movie "Planet of the Apes," and they have one child together, who was

Speak Chinese - "Casablanca" to be remade on Indian shores

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

"Casablanca" to be remade on Indian shores

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-09 09:25

An Indian filmmaker is remaking "Casablanca," swapping the Rick's Cafe of
the Oscar-winning classic for a restaurant in south India, and the World
War Two backdrop for the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka.

In the 1942 film, Humphrey Bogart played a club owner who romances a
married Ingrid Bergman and helps her escape the Nazis with her husband, a
resistance leader.

"My film will be a tribute to the original," said Rajeev Nath, the
director who plans to premiere his Malayalam language remake, "Ezham
Mudra" (The Seventh Seal), in the coastal Moroccan city where the
original was set.

"As a student of films, I had watched this great classic 20 times."

Nath's protagonist is an Indian diplomat-turned restaurateur who helps
his lover and her husband, both Tamil separatist rebels fighting the Sri
Lankan government, escape from India.

In the adaptation, the hero and his lover meet in a beachside restaurant.

Nath says his film will swap the World War Two background of the original
for the separatist movement in Sri Lanka -- where Tamils have been
fighting for a separate ethnic homeland in the north and east of the
Indian Ocean island -- but does not indulge in any politics.

"It is neither against nor in support of their cause," said the
55-year-old director, who met some Tamil Tiger rebels during a trip to
Norway.

The Sri Lankan civil war has killed nearly 70,000 people since 1983,
about 4,500 of them since last year alone.

The war strikes a strong chord across the Palk Strait in southern India
where more than 60 million Indian Tamils live. India has had a complex
political and military link to the conflict and Tamil rebels have also
taken refuge here.

Nath begins shooting next month and some parts are to be filmed in Sri
Lanka. The film is slated for a 2008 release.

"Ezham Mudra," which is Nath's 12th project as director, features
Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi and Bollywood actress Mandira Bedi in the
roles famously essayed by Bogart and Bergman.

Nath, who won India's prestigious national award for direction in 1999
for his Malayalam film "Janani" (Mother), said remaking "Casablanca" was
a dream come true.

"Casablanca" ranked third after "Citizen Kane" and "The Godfather" on a
list of 100 best American films in a poll conducted by the American Film
Institute in 2007.

Phillippe denies reconciliation reports with Witherspoon

(WENN)
Updated: 2007-08-07 10:23

Hollywood hunk Ryan Phillippe has denied reports he is giving his
marriage with Reese Witherspoon another try after the couple were spotted
lunching together.

The couple split last October after six years of marriage and two
children together. They are currently in the middle of divorce
proceedings.

Recent reports claimed the ex-couple had been seen jogging, shopping and
lunching together in Brentwood, California, with an unnamed friend
saying, "Reese and Ryan are trying to work it out. They are still close."

However, the Gosford Park actor's representative tells the New York Post,
"It's not true."

Airport Hip

By Lee Mack (City Weekend)
Updated: 2007-08-06 10:15

You'll be excused for feeling like you've wandered into someone's living
room when you enter Wain Wain; that's pretty much what it is.

Carved out of a corner apartment on the 35th floor of the Xiandai SOHO
complex (and taking advantage of some rather lenient zoning laws) this
fashionably understated Japanese lounge has one of the most amazing views
in the city, commanding both Guomao and Xidawang Lu. Although the owner,
a young Japanese lad, attributes inspiration for the place to first class
lounges in airports, it's really a flat with funky music where you can
chill out with the Japanese friends you never knew you had.

The two back rooms feature semi-private rooms (tricked out with tatami
mats) for KOK and Nintendo (there's even a Wii!). The door fee structure
is complicated (basically it's RMB50 until 6 p.m. and RMB128 after), but
once in, it's all you can consume.

Location: Room 3512,?Building A, Xiandai SOHO, 88 Jianguo Lu, Chaoyang

Smash dishes to relieve pressure

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-08-03 11:36

At a new restaurant you can not only enjoy the dishes on offer, but can
also smash them, in a new service to help customers let out their pent-up
feelings or release pressure.

Outlines of a man and a woman are painted on the walls of three
"abreaction rooms" in the restaurant. "Imagining those people for whom
you hate, customers blow off anger by throwing dishes against them," a
staff member told the Beijing Evening News.

"A plate costs 10 yuan, while porcelain utensils vary from 30 to 200
yuan," the staff member continued, standing amidst pieces of broken
porcelain all over the place. The minimum charge for the special therapy
is said to be 50 yuan, about 6.6 USD.

Ever since the service was offered half a month ago, nearly 300 dishes
have sacrificed themselves for the customers' mental health.

"Such behaviour is a great waste of resources," criticized Mr. Wang,
"breaking plates isn't a necessarily way to ease one's temper."

Psychology expert Zong Chunshan agrees with the opinion. He says people
do need measures to deal with pressure, but smashing dishes is not
supposed to be one of them. What's more, the impulse for violence
triggered by such behaviour may affect their daily life.

"I don't feel safe to eat in a restaurant when people around me are full
of anger," Miss Lv gravely commented.

US actress Thandie Newton reveals bulimic past

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-02 08:51

British-raised Hollywood actress Thandie Newton used to suffer from
bulimia and still bares the scars, she revealed in a new magazine
interview.

She began suffering from the eating disorder when she was 14 and training
for a ballet exam, Newton -- who won best supporting actress at last
year's British BAFTA awards for her role in "Crash" -- told Easy Living
magazine.

"I ate nothing but cottage cheese. It didn't seem so strange. My mum was
a health visitor, so we never had butter in our house, we had Flora. I
had a very healthy, nutrition-conscious upbringing," she said.

The disorder turned into an obsession when she started going out with an
older man, said the 34-year-old.

"We used to go out to dinner all the time, and he'd get so excited about
eating... and it must have been my way of separating myself from him - by
becoming bulimic.

"I would go back to the flat that we were sharing at the time, and I'd
throw up," she said.

Explaining that she suffered from "horrible bulimia for about a year,"
she said: "I've still got the scars on my knuckles from where I put my
fingers down my throat."

Newton, who also starred in "Mission Impossible 2," was born in Zambia
and raised there and in England, where she went to Cambridge University
before embarking on a glittering movie career.

Angelina Jolie and Fran Drescher team up to fight cancer

(AccessHollywood)
Updated: 2007-07-31 16:25

Angelina Jolie and Fran Drescher might be an unlikely combination, but
they are certainly a lifesaving one, as the duo has teamed up to fight
cancer.

Angelina, who lost her mother to ovarian cancer, has joined forces with
Fran, a uterine cancer survivor, to do some work with Fran's Cancer
Schmancer鈥 a charity devoted to women's health.

"Her mother had ovarian cancer and did not win her battle, so she is
going to lock elbows with me and we are going to do some things together.
We will do a PSA and maybe go to Washington," Fran said. "We are
dedicated to ensure that all women's cancers get diagnosed in Stage 1 by
galvanizing and educating, then we can change policy by signing
petitions."

Thankfully, TV's former "Nanny" has been cancer-free since she beat it
seven years ago at age 42.

"I was just so upset because the cure for cancer was a radical
hysterectomy and that's a difficult operation for any woman, but for one
who never had any children, like myself, that's a bitter pill to
swallow," Fran added. "By the end of the first year, I was back to myself
鈥 a new version of myself. And in many ways, a better version because I
became a person that has purpose."

Fran says a positive attitude is the key to survival, and during her
battle she developed a way to keep negative thoughts out of her mind.

"Don't mix imagination with fear 鈥 it's a deadly cocktail. Wear a
rubber band and every time you start to connect the dots that aren't
necessarily there, snap that wrist band and say, 'Don't mix imagination
with fear,'" she added.

Depp toasts Hunter S. Thompson with "Rum Diary"

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-30 15:27

?

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is moving closer to bringing Hunter S. Thompson's
autobiographical novel "The Rum Diary" to the big screen, seven years
after the project was first announced.

Oscar-winning producer Graham King, the Oscar-winning producer of "The
Departed," has acquired all rights to the property, which King would
produce with Depp for Warner Independent Pictures.

A spokesperson for King's GK Films banner said it was hoped that
production would begin shortly after principal photography is completed
on Depp's next film, Mira Nair's crime drama "Shantaram." No shooting
dates have been set for either film.

Loosely based on the late author's experience working as a freelance
journalist in Puerto Rico in the late '50s, the book was written in 1959
but not published until 1998. Depp would play a reporter who works
alongside a motley crew of self-destructive staffers at a struggling San
Juan newspaper, where an erotic love triangle emerges.

Bruce Robinson, whose 1987 comedy "Withnail & I" gained a cult following,
is writing the screenplay and directing.

Depp previously played Thompson's alter ego in Terry Gilliam's 1996
adaptation of the author's book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" for
Universal Pictures.

Many plans to make "Rum Diary" have been announced over the years. The
now-defunct indie production outfit Shooting Gallery and SPi Films
optioned the book and announced plans to make the film in 2000, with Depp
set to star and executive produce and Nick Nolte co-starring. A new
producer came on board in 2002, and Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hartnett
were soon attached as cast members.

Del Toro reportedly was set to make his directorial debut with "Rum
Diary" in late 2003, but the project remained dormant through Thompson's
February 2005 suicide. According to their reps, Del Toro, Nolte and
Hartnett are no longer attached to the project.

Learn Chinese online - Navigating the subway system: a guide for novices

CITYLIFE / zhuanti

Navigating the subway system: a guide for novices

By Laura Bond
Updated: 2007-07-26 16:36

With heightened awareness of global warming and the call for individuals
to reduce their "carbon footprint", there is no better time to use public
transport around Beijing.

Clean and efficient, the intricate network of buses and subways will take
you almost anywhere around the city.

For those with limited Putonghua (Mandarin), this can be a struggle. Bus
timetables are written only in Chinese making it nearly impossible to
figure out which bus to take where.

The subway system on the other hand is manageable and in fact a must-do
if you want to see how the locals really get around.

All the maps in the subway system are in Chinese but most tourist guides
include details of subway stops. Each station is clearly marked in pinyin
and once you鈥檙e on the subway, the next stop is announced in Chinese
and English.

Currently, the city has three major subway lines now.

Line One runs horizontally across the city, running past such
destinations as the People's Liberation Army Military Museum, Tian'anmen
Square and the Silk Market.

Line Two is a loop that goes around the city core and intersects with
Line One at two different stops. Points of interest on this line include,
The Lama temple, the Drum and Bell Tower, and Xizhi men stop puts you
within a 7-yuan pedicab ride to the Beijing Zoo.

Tickets for the subway can be purchased at each station for a meager 3
yuan and when transferring between Line One and Two there is no need to
purchase a new ticket.

A few pointers for the subway novice:

Getting a seat: If you ever won the game "musical chairs" as a kid, you
will be a natural at trying to grab a seat on the subway. The minute you
see someone motioning to get up, dart to where they are and proceed to
hover above them. Then let the games begin as some 20 other people
attempt to fend you off for the same seat.

Getting off the Subway: It may seem straightforward, but getting out of
the train is not easy when you are crammed at the furthest point from the
door and 20 people are pushing their way onto the car before anyone has
had the chance to get off. Position yourself near the door when your stop
is coming.

Hydrate: Make sure you carry a big bottle of water with you as it can be

Retrieve the quietness

By Fei Lai (Shanghai Daily)

The customer is always right, says the "creative director" at AIAIA - it
is the fashion style she wants that matters most, not what the director
may think when on a buying expedition.

Not all fashion boutiques keep a high profile. AIAIA, taking its name
from an island in a Greek fairytale, is located quietly and neatly in a
tranquil two-story old house on Taiyuan Road.

"It is a kind of different atmosphere, unlike those in the center of town
which offer too much," says Miyuki Miyama, AIAIA's creative director.
"The private space here gives a 'private feeling' to every newcomer. It's
quieter, guests can pick up and try on clothes without being disturbed."

Purple walls, cozy sofa and warm lights, which in the Japanese owner's
eyes is good for creativity, give off a peaceful and elegant scent. With
a total of four showrooms, two on each floor, the store has a nice layout.

"On the first floor is the Tokyo-style zone, which is acceptable,
practical and easy to make, and a small room for discount clothes,"
Miyama says. "The upper floor displays unique designs from Europe, such
as England and France."

It is true that at the first step into the shop, the mostly
black-and-white series of Tokyo collection murmur the attractiveness that
these two fashionable colors always have. However, step upstairs, the
flavor of Europe swarms over the eyes. The diversity in colors and
designs brings guests into a world of sweet candy.

"Special items from each designer indicate different characters. The
unique clothes we sell are all works from international pioneering young
designers," Miyama says. "Big-name designers such as Anne Valerie Hash
and Matthew Williamson can be found among the European collections."

Although Hash is a young Paris designer, she has cooperated with many
luxurious brands. Wise, humorous and simple, her feminine designs do not
have so many colors but features smooth and fluent cuttings of lines.

Williamson is characterized by geographic patterns. "He is one of the
treasures for entertainment stars," Miyama commented.

Pnyin - Long-term RMB reform benefits China and US

/ Page 10

Long-term RMB reform benefits China and US
By He Fan
Updated: 2007-08-07 07:11

The reform to China's exchange regime is being carried out in a
market-orientated means toward a long-term target. Turing it into a
political issue would only harm the process or even tarnish the ultimate
target itself.

China's exchange regime is one of the major topics in the Strategic
Economic Dialogue between China and the United States, which began in
September 2006. The talks are only one indication of the US government's
concern over China's exchange rate.

Before commenting on America's over-concern, it is necessary to examine
the gains and losses of the US on the renminbi exchange rate issue.

Will the United States reap great benefit from a significant renminbi
appreciation? Certainly not.

China will see reduced exports as a consequence of renminbi appreciation,
but the US will not stop buying the necessities it requires. US importers
may turn to other developing countries. But if the commodities from those
countries are more expensive than Chinese goods, the switch does not
improve the US's international balance by reducing its trade deficit.

If China loses its share of the international market for the yuan
appreciation, its economic growth will be slowed, cutting down its
imports from the US. It will not help reduce the US trade deficit, either.

Commodity trade aside, the renminbi's appreciation will also hurt the US
in capital account items. US direct investment will become less rewarding
after the yuan gains against the US dollar, decreasing US profit from
international investment.

As a matter of fact, the US has more to gain if China maintains the
renminbi at a stable level.

When the US manufacturers shift their factories into China for the
relatively lower costs here, US customers still enjoy the products by
importing them from China. The consumption of resources, energy and the
pollution to the environment during the manufacturing process are all
left in China.

When the yuan is stable, the US has a more important advantage.

Thanks to the trade surplus, China has accumulated a large sum of US
dollars and its world largest foreign exchange reserve is mostly in US
dollars. Such a big sum, a considerable portion of which is in the form
of US treasury bonds, contributes a great deal to maintaining the
position of the US dollar as an international currency.

Russia, Switzerland and several other countries have restructured their
foreign exchange reserve and reduced the US dollars they hold. China is
unlikely to follow suit as long as yuan's exchange rate is stable against
the US dollar.

The Chinese central bank will be forced to sell US dollars once the
renminbi appreciates dramatically, which might lead to a mass
depreciation of the US dollar against other currencies.

The Chinese government launched an exchange reform regime years ago. The
renminbi will be appreciated gradually, the exchange regime would evolve
in a managed floating exchange rate system and an effective foreign
currency market would be established.

China made such a choice because the former arrangement of pegging to the
US dollar might weaken China's flexibility in monetary policies. And it
has also realized that an undervalued yuan will slow the industrial
restructuring and cause vicious competition among Chinese exporters.

However, this reform is only part of a much bigger effort to upgrade the
country's industrial structure. The exchange regime is not going to
finish the task single-handedly.

First of all, the exchange regime reform is not a solution to tackle
China's trade surplus. China's exports are mainly propelled by the
processing trade, which is not sensible to the exchange rate. Even if the
renminbi does rise dramatically, the processing trade is not going to
drop instantly and the trade surplus may not diminish. Figures from Japan
and China's Taiwan Province, where the processing trade used to dominate,
have also indicated a lasting surplus in the case of an appreciation of
local currency.

The exchange regime's reform will not put the lopsided industrial
structure into balance by itself. Theoretically, a changing rate would
help promote the development of industries that are not trade-orientated,
in China's case, the tertiary sector.

However, China's tertiary sector was fledgling for multiple reasons,
including inadequate supply of qualified talent and underdeveloped
infrastructure. Such factors are not easily improved by the exchange
regime reform.

Therefore, an objective view about exchange regime reform is
indispensable when people discuss the renminbi exchange rate.

The exchange rate equals a price between currencies in economic theories.
Price is the key to allocating resources, which would bear remarkable
significance for all resources in the market.

The Chinese government is determined to further this reform, but only
according to its own blueprint. The greater target might be tarnished if
the exchange regime reform is boiled down to the appreciation of
renminbi. How much should the yuan be appreciated? How long will it rise?
Similar questions should find their answers from the progress in related
fields. No one can give definite answers before the progress is achieved.

It would be totally against the rule of the market economy when a
country, through a political course, asks the Chinese government to
change a key price in the economy. It is both unwise politically and
unrealistic to ask China to realize the targets for its long-term reform
in a short time.

The Strategic Economic Dialogue is a constructive innovation to eliminate
bilateral misunderstanding, pinpoint the strategic issues of common
concern and maximize the benefits of Sino-US cooperation. It may cost the
chance of cooperation if the US insists on politicizing China's exchange
regime reform and the political shortsighted doggedness will also lead to
the neglect of more important issues.

Politics at the China Academy of Social Sciences

News of the actress' 23 December nuptials leaked out a month ago, but now

And there will be one big tribute during the ceremony - to the actress'

according to the National Enquirer.

Heigl met and fell in love with singer/songwriter Kelley when he hired
her to play his love interest in the video for his single Only You.

Seven Deadly Workplace Sins

The guy who takes full credit for a job well done -- albeit any help he received along the way.

The "one-for-the-taking-and-focused-on-quick-ways-to-get-ahead" cougar lady.

The hot-headed jerk that jumps down your throat at any sign of question or disagreement concerning his latest project.

While most of us share a common goal of achievement and success in the workplace, we also know that there are ways to accomplish this ambition -- and ways to fall short.

"Success in the workplace doesn't happen 'on a wing and a prayer,' but rather by knowing what specific job promotion pitfalls to avoid in working toward that heavenly pot of career gold," says John McKee, business coach and author of "21 Ways Women in Management Shoot Themselves in the Foot."

To avoid becoming the once-respectable, often-humble guy who got a promotion but lost his wits (and gained an ego), follow McKee's advice on the seven deadly career sins to assure career advancement and move you on the path to paycheck promise land:

1. Pride

Despite any help they received along the way, time and again, people take full credit for their accomplishments in the office, thinking that personal success will fast-track their career.

The sin: "What often goes unrecognized is that people around, and especially below, the serially solo-successful resent the ego-centricity, and may actually begin to actively undermine that person's efforts in the future."
The salvation: "A dose of acknowledgment of and appreciation for one's peers and subordinates, so they may share in some of the glory, can go a long way to foster one's long-term success."

2. Envy

It's OK to acknowledge other's achievements, but lamenting "what should have been yours" can be destructive and adversely impact your own ability to focus on current job tasks, McKee says.

The sin: "Allowing yourself to be overly envious of others in the workplace can sabotage your self-esteem, which is one vital characteristic every successful business person shares."
The salvation: "Rather than being envious, let the accomplishments of others become motivational fuel for your fire in working toward your own successes."

3. Anger

Anger doesn't benefit anyone in the workplace -- it only damages your reputation, credibility and professionalism.

The sin: "Those prone to angry outbursts rarely get promoted; they are seen as being poor leaders who cannot inspire or motivate others."
The salvation: "It's fine to feel passionately about your job or a project at hand and to disagree with others, but learn how to channel those emotions into actions that will work to your benefit in the eyes of others -- especially your superiors -- rather than against it."

4. Greed

An employee's selfish desire for "more, sooner" is what motivates many workers. While these folks may do well in the moment, they won't be prepared to take things to the next level, McKee warns.

The sin: "Taking this notion to the extreme can and will be self-defeating as core values become misguided and life becomes unbalanced in the process."
The salvation: "The road to success requires a long-term approach in all aspects of one's job duties. Those laser-focused on quick, short-term gains may do well in the moment, but will be ill-prepared to take things to the next level."

5. Sloth

Indolence gets you nowhere in life -- especially in corporate America. Laziness in the workplace will have you sitting idle, watching others surpass you in success and authority.

The sin: "Simply put, complacency and laziness have no place whatsoever in the workplace -- especially for those with high aspirations. Expecting one's past achievements and successes to carry them forward in their long-term career is imprudent."
The salvation: "Treat every work day and every project as if your job, and your future at large, depends on it. It very well may."

6. Gluttony

Too much focus on only one facet of life, like work, is a recipe for overall failure. Make sure you're ready -- professionally and personally -- to take on new and bigger challenges, for which expectations are also bigger, McKee says.

The sin: "Many individuals move up the corporate ladder so fast that they actually end up failing as a consequence. More isn't always better -- especially if you're not ready for the challenge at hand."
The salvation: "Achieving career success also includes maintaining a life balance, and a misplaced professional desire can create a backlash both at home as well as amid peers for your perceived obsessiveness."

7. Lust

The old adage, "the grass is always greener" applies to the workplace as well. Spending your time focused on others' work achievements rather than working to further your own is a "sure-fire career killer," according to McKee.

The sin: "Spending an inordinate amount of time fixated on what you don't have rather than what you do will foster a bad attitude and negative overall demeanor."
The salvation: "One's overall 'presence' in the office plays a big part in who gets promoted and who doesn't. No matter how ambitious, it's prudent to be 'present' and make the most out of your current position at this moment in time."
