Paris Hilton is to release a diary documenting her time in jail.

The hotel heiress is currently imprisoned in Century Regional Detention
Centre in California, serving a 23-day sentence.

(500,000) and is already at the centre of a bidding war between a
number of magazines and television shows.

A source told the Daily Star: "Pariss jail diary will make a dramatic
read. If she can make it believable and not exaggerate too much she can
expect to make a fortune

"And when she gets out its the story everyone will want C how the
pampered rich girl coped with life behind bars."

Italian film industry rebukes Tarantino

Film Festival May 22, 2007.[AP]

The Italian cinema industry is up in arms after recent comments from
director Quentin Tarantino, who called the current state of the film
industry "depressing."

Italian newspapers on Monday and over the weekend were full of reaction
to the American director's comments, which came less than a month after
it was revealed that he would co-present a series of Spaghetti Westerns
in a special sidebar at this year's Venice Film Festival.

Tarantino is known to be a fan of old Italian films, but according to his
recent comments published in Sorrisi & Canzioni -- the country's leading
television magazine -- his love for the country's film productions does
not extend to more contemporary cuts.

"New Italian cinema is just depressing," Tarantino said. "Recent films
I've seen are all the same. They talk about boys growing up, or girls
growing up, or couples having a crisis, or vacations of the mentally
impaired."

Those defending modern Italian cinema included some of the best-known
names in the game.

"How dare he talk about Italian cinema when he doesn't know anything
about American cinema?" asked Naples-born Sophia Loren, according to
media reports.

"Tarantino is a brute," said filmmaker/actor Marco Bellocchio, a
five-time Palme d'Or nominee at the Cannes Film Festival and a member of
this year's Cannes jury.

Even editorial writers got in on the counterattack, with the left-wing
daily L'Unita saying Tarantino was "mentally impaired."

The center-left daily La Repubblica, Italy's second-largest newspaper,
said that if Italian film isn't what it used to be, neither was Tarantino.

"Tarantino is no longer the Tarantino who made 'Pulp Fiction,"' the
newspaper opined.

Nicole Richie, seen here in April 2007, the adopted daughter of singer
Lionel Richie, could get some jail time as her trial for driving under
the influence opens soon.[AFP]

LOS ANGELES - Nicole Richie admits she's "nervous" about the possibility
she may follow her friend Paris Hilton to jail.

Richie was charged with DUI in February. Police say she was under the
influence of booze and an unspecified drug when they stopped her last
year.

Richie told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show on KIIS-FM) in Los Angeles
that she understands she has to "take responsibility" and "deal with
whatever consequences" come her way.

Richie also denied a report that she'd been in rehab recently. She says
the rumor started because she hadn't been seen in a few weeks. Richie
says she was touring with her boyfriend Joel Madden of Good Charlotte.

Victoria Beckham may already be eminent in England, but now it seems she
is getting down and dirty to become a paparazzi-popular princess in
Hollywood.

According to the New York Daily News, Posh staged a strange PR stunt on
Monday by visiting the West Hollywood sex shop Pleasure Chest."

The tabloids of Tinseltown were reportedly tipped off about the sensual
stop-off and were there waiting for Poshs presence. But if that wasn't
enough, the British brunette also brought along a big blow-up doll
dressed just like her to act as a decoy.

Victoria apparently spent 45 minutes browsing the bedroom boutique which
is famous for its kinky costumes and other titillating toys.

Romanian abortion film wins Cannes prize

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu (C) holds the Palme d'Or award for his
film '4 Luni, 3 Saptamini Si 2 Zile' ('4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days') as
he is watched by British actress Charlotte Rampling (L) and hugged by
Jury President British director Stephen Frears during the awards ceremony
at the 60th Cannes Film Festival May 27, 2007.[AP]

CANNES, France - A harrowing film about illegal abortion in Communist-era
Romania beat 21 movies by well-known directors such as Quentin Tarantino,
Ethan and Joel Coen, and Wong Kar-wai to win the Cannes Film Festival's
top prize Sunday.

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's low-budget film, "4 Months, 3 Weeks
and 2 Days," depicts the horrors a student goes through to ensure her
friend can have a secret abortion.

Mungiu, who was awarded the Palme d'Or by actress Jane Fonda, said he
didn't even have enough money to shoot the film just six months ago. He
hoped the win would inspire other "small filmmakers from small countries."

"You don't necessarily need a big budget and big stars to tell a story
that everyone will listen to," said 39-year-old Mungiu, the first
Romanian to win Cannes' top prize.

The films shown at Cannes' 60th anniversary edition ran the gamut of
weighty subjects, from death and loss to abortion and aging. The winners
of the awards, announced by jury president Stephen Frears (director of
"The Queen"), reflected the darker themes.

Japanese director Naomi Kawase's "Mogari No Mori" ("The Mourning Forest")
took the festival's grand prize, the second-highest award, in a surprise.
The film is about two people a retirement home resident and a
caretaker at the center struggling to overcome the deaths of loved
ones.

The prize for best director went to American Julian Schnabel for his
French-language film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," based on a
memoir by a French magazine editor who became paralyzed after a stroke
and learned to write again by painstakingly blinking his eyelid.

The movie is Schnabel's third, after "Basquiat" and "Before Night Falls."

The jury awarded a special prize to director Gus Van Sant for his
impressionistic "Paranoid Park," which depicts a teenage skateboarder
whose life is turned upside down when he accidentally kills a security
guard. Van Sant, who won the festival's top prize in 2003 for "Elephant,"
recruited untrained actors on MySpace.com and shot the film in just a few
weeks.

Two films shared the jury prize: "Persepolis," Marjane Satrapi's moving
and humorous adaptation of her graphic novels about growing up during and
after Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, which she co-directed with Vincent
Paronnaud; and "Stellet Licht" ("Silent Light"), Carlos Reygadas' tale of
forbidden love set among Mennonite farmers of northern Mexico.

Acting honors went to Russia's Konstantin Lavronenko, who played a
troubled husband "The Banishment," a drama about a couple whose marriage
disintegrates during a stay in the countryside. The prize for best
actress went to South Korea's Jeon Do-yeon, who played a widow struggling
to cope with her husband's death in "Secret Sunshine."

German writer and director Fatih Akin's "The Edge of Heaven," a
German-Turkish cross-cultural tale of loss, mourning and forgiveness, won
the prize for best screenplay.

Several high-profile movies that screened at Cannes were not in the
running for prizes, including Michael Moore's "Sicko," "Ocean's Thirteen"
starring George Clooney and Matt Damon, and "A Mighty Heart," featuring
Angelina Jolie as the widow of slain journalist Daniel Pearl.

The Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men," a bloody, darkly funny tale
about a ruthless killer in Texas, was hailed by critics but snubbed by
the jury. Other films up for the top prize included Tarantino's "Death
Proof," Wong's "My Blueberry Nights," and David Fincher's "Zodiac."

In a big weekend for Romania, another film from the country took honors
in a secondary competition called "Un Certain Regard." Director Cristian
Nemescu died in a car crash last year at age 27, leaving his "California
Dreamin'" incomplete. Jurors had initially decided not to judge the film,
about U.S. soldiers in a small Romanian village, but changed their minds
when they saw it.

On Saturday night, festival organizers screened the late Henry Fonda's
"Twelve Angry Men," then surprised his daughter, Jane Fonda, with a
special lifetime achievement award at a gala dinner.

Festival President Gilles Jacob recounted Fonda's career highs and lows,
including her controversial trip to North Vietnam in 1972, joking that he
never thought the festival would honor someone who had been "spied on and
hounded by the FBI."

The 69-year-old Fonda, visibly moved, put the focus back on her father,
responding in excellent French, "For my father, his films were his way of
representing justice, quality and democracy." She added her hope that one
day, "the United States will again become the country that he stood for."

Representatives for actress Nicole Richie have slammed recent reports
that claimed that she had re-entered rehab to fight drug addiction.

The actress' spokespersons were reacting to reports published in The
National Enquirer and Star magazine, which suggested that she had started
her stint at Beau Monde facility on May 11 to cope with anorexia and her
dependence on painkiller.

"She is not in rehab," Richie's rep Nicole Perna told E! News.

"She is at home in Glendale. Sobriety is an ongoing process but she is
sober," the source added.

Meanwhile, Nicole was seen paying a visit to another doctor in Beverly
Hills on Monday, and she was said to come out of the clinic with smile on
her face.

Chinese Studies - Jolie, Pitt get emotional unveiling Daniel Pearl film

ENTERTAINMENT / Latest News

Jolie, Pitt get emotional unveiling Daniel Pearl film

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-05-22 16:51

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt spoke emotionally about love and family as
they premiered their new film Monday about the murder of US reporter
Daniel Pearl by Islamic extremists.
"A Mighty Heart" starring Jolie, produced by Pitt and directed by
Britain's Michael Winterbottom, was warmly applauded at a packed
screening, with some critics saying it was the actress's best work since
her 2000 Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted".

Hollywood's golden couple was joined at the Cannes film festival by
Pearl's widow Mariane, whose book on her husband's murder while
researching terrorist networks in Pakistan in 2002 is the basis of the
movie.

The 31-year-old actress said she was at about the same point in her
pregnancy with Pitt's child when she began filming that Pearl had reached
when she confronted her husband's kidnapping and subsequent beheading.

"I remember being six months pregnant and thinking 'I can't imagine at
this time not having the father with me and being concerned about his
life and trying to eat and trying to remember to get some sleep'," she
said.

"So as a woman it just made me so much more connected to (Mariane) and
aware of her and also knowing that carrying that life inside, that little
boy that's half Danny that is so so amazing and her love -- I'm sure
there couldn't also have been a greater gift at that time to help pull
her through something like that."

Pitt, 43, said starting a family with Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for
the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, had pushed him to pursue work that
mattered.

"As a father, too, I look at my kids and realise that they will inherit
this world, and I know this is true for Mariane as well and we want to do
everything we can to throw our weight in and make it a little bit
better," he said.

Pitt, who is also in Cannes for the premiere of the all-star caper
"Ocean's Thirteen" on Thursday, said he had been inspired by Mariane's
courage and empathy for other terror victims.

"The strength of Mariane through this situation -- for me it was an
epiphany. As Angie said, she had every reason to come out of this
embittered and angry and full of hatred and instead has shown us another
way," he said.

"It lights the way for me."

Jolie, who underwent a complete makeover to play Pearl, a Frenchwoman of
Cuban and Dutch origin, said the film had also made her and Pitt
reconsider the role of the media and the hounding they face daily by
celebrity photographers.

"There were the scenes where there were paparazzi and I felt sorry for
her (Mariane), thinking 'My god, what this must be like for somebody in
that situation, that I really can't imagine -- going through that, having
that kind of media coverage for something as difficult as that and for
somebody who is not used to it...'"

The A-list couple also gently teased each other during the press
conference.

When Pitt was asked to follow up on Jolie's remarks about religious
conflict and reconciliation, the distracted actor apologised with a
laugh: "I was wafting in the words of...what's her name."

Pearl said she had developed a friendship with Jolie and Pitt and was
very pleased with the film.

"We've grown quite close," Pearl said. "I think of my son who will one
day see this film -- it was a great moment of pain but it is addressed
(in the film) by someone who loves me and that means a lot to me."

The film, which is screening out of competition at Cannes, recreates a
scene in the book in which Pearl sharply attacks a CNN reporter who had
asked at the time whether she had seen the video of her husband's
beheading.

In a poignant exchange, the journalist appeared at the Cannes press
conference to ask Pearl: "Could you forgive me now if you haven't yet?"

Pearl replied: "I accept your apologies."

Winterbottom said he saw the film as a continuation of themes covered in
his 2006 feature "Road to Guantanamo," a docu-drama about three British
citizens held at the US lockup in Cuba for several months without charge.

But he dismissed a reporter's question about whether his sympathy for the
former Guantanamo inmates meant he empathised with Pearl's killers.

"They were in a sense caught up in the sort of post-9/11 conflict in the
same way that Danny and Mariane were I think," he said. "Of course it's
completely wrong...but it is part of the same situation."

Learning Mandarin - Campion laments lack of female directors

Campion laments lack of female directors

From left, Canadian director Atom Egoyan, New Zealand director Jane
Campion and American director Michael Cimino arrive for the screening of
the film 'Chacun Son Cinema' ('To Each His Own Cinema'), at the 60th
International film festival in Cannes, southern France, on Sunday, May
20, 2007. [AP]

CANNES, France - When Jane Campion was honored onstage at the Cannes Film
Festival with about 30 other major directors Sunday, she was the lone
woman of the bunch. And she's still not used to how strange that feels.

The New Zealander is the only woman filmmaker to have won Cannes' top
prize, for "The Piano" in 1993. This year, she showed a fantasy short
film about a ladybug a woman dressed up in an insect costume who
gets stomped on in a movie theater. She said it was a metaphor for women
in the film world.

"I just think this is the way the world is, that men control the money,
and they decide who they're going to give it to," Campion said in
explaining why so few women get movies made.

Cannes, like the film world in general, is short on female directors. Of
the 22 movies in the running for the top prize this year at Cannes, only
three were made by women.

Cartoonist Marjane Satrapi co-directed the screen adaptation of her
graphic novel "Persepolis," a memoir of growing up in Iran after the 1979
Islamic revolution; Japan's Naomi Kawase made a road trip film called
"Mogari No Mori" ("The Mourning Forest"); and France's Catherine Breillat
directed "Une Vieille Maitresse" ("An Old Mistress"), a period piece
about the ups and downs of arranging a marriage between a libertine and a
virtuous young aristocrat.

Women have made some high-profile appearances here lately. Last year,
Sofia Coppola took "Marie Antoinette" to Cannes, and in 2005, American
director Miranda July won an award for best first-time filmmaker for "Me
and You and Everyone We Know."

But parity is a long way off at Cannes and across the Atlantic in
Hollywood.

A survey released last year said U.S. female directors made only 7
percent of the 250 highest-grossing films in 2005. Martha M. Lauzen, the
San Diego State University professor who conducted the study, called her
report "The Celluloid Ceiling."

Campion, 53, is one of only three women ever to be nominated for an
Academy Award for best director, along with Coppola ("Lost in
Translation") in 2003 and Lina Wertmuller ("Seven Beauties") in 1976.
Campion was nominated for "The Piano," her account of adultery set in New
Zealand in the 1850s.

Campion was one of 35 directors invited to make a film short for Cannes'
60th anniversary this year. When the group went onstage together Sunday,
Campion was the lone women in a sea of male directors that included Roman
Polanski ("The Pianist"), Gus Van Sant ("Elephant"), Wong Kar-wai ("In
The Mood for Love"), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Babel") and Atom
Egoyan ("The Sweet Hereafter").

Egoyan told Campion afterward that he admired the female vantage point in
her movies' sex scenes especially the steamy scenes from the Meg Ryan
thriller "In the Cut," which he called "some of the most erotic material
I've ever seen."

But Campion said some men are "shocked" by that female perspective. "They
see that women have a different way of seeing the world altogether," she
said.

Campion's next picture is the story of poet John Keats' romance with his
young neighbor Fanny Brawne, a love story that was cut short when he died
at age 25. Campion plans to tell the story from Brawne's point of view.

"When I think of what's fantastic about women, it's their generosity,
their intuitiveness, their capacity to trust emotions, to be emotional,
to nurture, to promote peace, to care about the planet's environment so
their children can inherit it," she said. "Those qualities aren't sexy
for guys, but (they're) quite natural in women."

Cannes' glittering 60th edition opens

British actor Jude Law, left, and American actress-singer Norah Jones
arrive for the screening of the film 'My Blueberry Nights,' at the 60th
International film festival in Cannes, southern France, on Wednesday, May
16, 2007.[AP]

Cannes celebrated its 60th edition Wednesday by inviting a screen
newcomer to open the film festival: singer Norah Jones, playing a
heartbroken lover in a role that forced her to cry on command and spend
hours smooching co-star Jude Law.

Their movie, "My Blueberry Nights," by director Wong Kar-wai, was the
first screening in an 11-day fete of cinema, parties and dealmaking.

The festival has an extra dash of glitter this year: Stars slated for
appearances include George Clooney, Sharon Stone, Brad Pitt, Leonardo
DiCaprio, Al Pacino and Angelina Jolie. Movies on Cannes' lineup range
from "Ocean's Thirteen" to Michael Moore's "Sicko," to films from Russia
to Mexico to South Korea.

Jones wore a strapless midnight blue gown, and Law and Wong wore black
sunglasses, as they climbed the red carpet. Other stars at the premiere
included China's Gong Li, India's Aishwarya Rai and France's Juliette
Binoche. Diane Kruger ("Troy") was the first German to open the ceremony,
where American director David Lynch ("Blue Velvet") screened a surreal
film short set in a movie theater.

Cannes strives to achieve just the right blend of Hollywood glitz and
international arthouse films, and the opening night movie certainly fit
the bill.

Hong Kong director Wong ("In The Mood for Love") is a Cannes favorite,
and "My Blueberry Nights" is his first English-language movie. Besides
Law and Jones, the cast includes Natalie Portman, who plays a Nevada girl
on a gambling streak; David Strathairn, in a terrific turn as an
alcoholic policeman; and Rachel Weisz as his unhappy wife.

Jones stars as a New Yorker who hits the road on a curative cross-country
trip after being dropped by her boyfriend. She had never acted before,
but Wong heard her sultry voice and knew he had a role for her.

"Basically, when you listen to her voice only, without seeing her face,
you can have a kind of a story out of it," he said.

Jones said she was terrified when they shot her first scene.

"I remember the first take we did, my voice was really high," she said,
finishing her sentence with a squeak. "I was just terribly nervous, and
Kar-wai came over and patted me on the back and I relaxed a little."

But Wong said Jones grew more at ease over the shoot she impressed him
in a scene where he asked her to cry.

"We rolled the camera and she cried, and after that I said, `Well, it's
great,' and she said, `Do you want one more?'" Wong said.

The movie's turning point is a kissing scene in a diner, with Law licking
drops of ice cream from Jones' lips as she sleeps. Jones said Wong had
very particular ideas about what he wanted. "We shot it a long time,"
Jones said.

The actors hadn't seen the movie yet as they walked down the red carpet.
Earlier in the day, it garnered muted applause at a showing for critics.

Cannes was founded in 1939 as an alternative to the Venice Film Festival
in Mussolini's Italy but almost as soon as it opened, the festival was
canceled because World War II broke out. Cannes did not get going in
earnest until the 1950s.

The festival is looking back at its glamorous history this year with a
photo exhibit on the beach. There's Cary Grant in black tie, Natalie Wood
and Warren Beatty hailed by paparazzi and Kim Novak in a limousine, with
raindrops sparkling on the window like diamonds.

But the celebrations are more than just nostalgia. For a feature-length
homage to the movies, it commissioned 35 shorts from directors including
Wong, Roman Polanski ("The Pianist"), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
("Babel"), the Coens ("Fargo") and Wim Wenders ("Wings of Desire.")

Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese ("The Departed") has been enlisted
to give a master class on moviemaking.

Pacino, Clooney, Pitt and Matt Damon will promote threequel "Ocean's
Thirteen," DiCaprio brings his environmental documentary "The 11th Hour,"
and celebrity super couple Pitt and Jolie will appear he for "Ocean's
Thirteen," she for "A Mighty Heart," in which she plays the widow of
murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

Those films are screening out of competition, as is "Sicko" by Moore,
whose "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top prize at Cannes in 2004. But his look
at the U.S. health care system is sure to be one of the festival's most
talked-about movies. The U.S. Treasury Department opened an investigation
into a trip Moore took to Cuba accompanied by a group of ailing Sept.
11 rescue workers during the film's shooting.

Depp praises Keith Richards

(ITN)
Updated: 2007-05-10 09:24

Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp has described working with
Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards as "perfect".

The actor, who teams up with the guitarist in the third instalment of the
series At World's End, heaped praised on the Rolling Stones hellraiser
for being a professional star.

He said: "Keith did his bit like it was any other gig, he did it
perfectly, it wasn't like, you know people could tell that it was his
first cinematic venture, he was just perfect.

"For me what was interesting, was seeing Keith as Captain Jack for the
first time, right in front of his eyes or interacting with Captain Jack."

The movie, which sees Depp's character Jack Sparrow needing his pals to
rescue him from the other end of the world, is set to rival the success
of Dead Man's Chest which set box office records worldwide.

Johnny also revealed that he will be sad to see one of his most famous
characters disappear from the big screen.

He added: "It's hard because you are faced with the potential that this
guy you have been with and I know it sounds totally absurd, you may not
ever see him again.

"So there's a period of decompression which involves depression you just
have to get through it."

At World's End is released in UK cinemas on May 25.

Olympic Art Exhibition. [Photo: artbeijing]

As a warm-up event to Art Beijing 2007, Volkswagen's Olympic Art
Exhibition is scheduled to tour Shanghai, Beijing and Berlin starting
from May 22nd.

The exhibition will showcase auto-related art works that center on the
Beijing Olympics, created by Chinese artists Zhao Bandi and Ji Dachun.

Zhao Bandi came to public spotlight with performance art in which he and
his team dressed in toy panda costumes and acted in ordinary daily
situations.

For this exhibition, the artist took his Panda team to Shanghai's
Volkswagen and shot a short video program featuring the life and work of
auto workers of the factory. By such experiment, artist Zhao hopes his
pandas performers can help bring life back to the "cool" auto making
world.

While artist Ji Dachun, demonstrated his art talent by painting in five
colors of the Olympic Rings on a Volkswagen car, hoping to give it a new
life.

The exhibition will last six days at Shanghai business center Xintiandi.

As part of a biggest ever contemporary art scene, Art Beijing 2007 is due
to show up at Beijing's Agriculture Exhibition Center from September 20th
to 23rd.

Pnyin - 'Perfect Stranger' a perfect mess

ENTERTAINMENT / Review

'Perfect Stranger' a perfect mess

By Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune)
Updated: 2007-04-16 10:28

For its big finish, the screwy erotic thriller "Perfect Stranger" goes
for the murder mystery equivalent of the double axel followed by a triple
lutz, a quadruple toe loop and, for all I know, a quintuple bypass. It
doesn't quite come off. It's like watching a skater skid on his
hindquarters straight across the ice, fwoomp , over the rail, clear past
the penalty box and smack into the third row. The surprise ending is such
a pretzel, it may in fact still be ending.

Rumor has it director James Foley shot three different solutions,
indicting three different killers in the story's central murder. Just
hearing that news sent me into a "Clue" flashback featuring Lesley Ann
Warren with a candlestick in the billiard room. And speaking of
flashbacks, "Perfect Crime" sets a record for least amount of time
elapsing between a plot point and its on-screen reiteration. Two minutes
after Halle Berry's reporter character meets up with an old friend, a
cryptic gamin who dumps a steaming pile of scandalous backstory in
Berry's lap, a snippet of their subway platform conversation is repeated
for the benefit of narrative clarity. Already we need an info-flashback
to bail us out? This can't bode well for what screenwriter Todd
Komarnicki has in store.

For a while "Perfect Stranger" gets by on the furrowed-brow determination
of its cast and the workmanlike sheen provided by the director, James
Foley. His good films include "After Dark, My Sweet" and "Glengarry Glen
Ross." This one's a couple of steps down: fairly diverting until it
starts becoming ridiculous. Then it's just ridiculous.

Berry plays Rowena Price, investigative ace for a New York Post-y paper
called the Courier. Judging from her Upper West Side palace, the Courier
gig (she writes under a male pseudonym) pays somewhere in the low eight
figures. And speaking of figures, Berry's isn't too bad! No hag, she.
Have you noticed? I'm not saying anything the movie doesn't affirm every
second. To underscore the point, people are always saying things to the
reporter like, "Hey, you sure look great in that dress."

Rowena learns from childhood pal Grace (Nicki Aycox) that she's been
sleeping with Manhattan's lord of advertising, Harrison Hill (Bruce
Willis, sporting a rug whose centerpiece appears to be an arrow pointing
at its owner's forehead). The gamin and Mr. Big met online. When Grace
turns up dead, Rowena poses as a temp and, with supernatural ease,
catches the perpetually roving eye of prime suspect Hill, a man who
never, ever seems to leave his office or have sex behind windows equipped
with curtains.

Another ruse involves Rowena posing as chat-room sexpot "Veronica,"
ensnaring Hill in an online web of deceit and lust. Is she risking her
life, and that of her insanely resourceful computer-hacker newspaper
colleague played by Giovanni Ribisi? A more pertinent question: Does the
film contain a scene of Berry pleasuring herself at the keyboard, at the
suspected killer's behest? At one point the answer, apparently, was
"yes." A second or two of this footage remains in the overseas trailers.
But in its final domestic cut "Perfect Stranger" has been ...
domesticated. The story is ruled by wormy geeks "interconnected online,"
as Rowena writes in her story, but "disconnected in life." It lacks the
rutting nuttiness of "Basic Instinct," even as it recycles much of that
film's kiss-or-kill premise.

At one point Ribisi, whose perpetual scrunched-up look of skepticism
becomes a kind of meta-critique, patiently explains recent plot
developments to Berry. Midway through the rehash she curls up on his lap
in a fetal position. Who can blame her? A movie star should put up with
only so much exposition unpacked awkwardly late in a chic but hollow game.

Chinese Mandarin - Daniel Craig named best-dressed man in Britain

Daniel Craig named best-dressed man in Britain

James Bond star Daniel Craig was named Britain's best-dressed man and
comic Russell Brand was branded the worst dress by men's style authority
GQ.

In an article in GQ's May issue, due out on Thursday, the magazine listed
the 10 best-dressed and worst-dressed men in the country.

The new 007 has topped the publication's annual style list, beating
Conservative politician David Cameron and Hollywood star Clive Owen.

Craig becomes the first James Bond since Sean Connery to take the title.

A GQ statement reads, "No Bond since Sean Connery has worn it better. It
works because the 007 uniform seems like an upgrade of what Craig would
naturally wear."

Elsewhere in the top 10, Jude Law was fifth, David Beckham sixth, Pete
Doherty seventh and British royal Prince Harry 10th.

Prince Harry also made it on the list -- the first royal to be included
in the poll -- placing 10th, with GQ describing him as "the sartorial
world's favourite Army recruit."

Chinese Studies - Fat, filthy or sincere, honest?

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Fat, filthy or sincere, honest?

By Raymond Zhou (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-03-26 09:32

This is the Year of the Pig. We Chinese are supposed to turn the animal
into a lovey-dovey pet. But, no! In spite of all the colorful piggy banks
that are sold in souvenir stores, we still have a love-hate relationship
with the pig.

When used figuratively, "pig" is predominantly pejorative. In English,
someone who is called "a pig" is greedy or gross. The Chinese connotation
is slightly different. A pig evokes three images: gluttonous, lazy and
dirty. The "lazy" part is a contrast with the Western interpretation. If
you're slothful, you cannot be too avaricious, right?

Well, obviously, it is a nicety that does not bother linguists. The
bottom line is, don't call anyone a pig, in either English or Chinese or
banter, because it'll be an insult.

But wait! A friend of mine calls himself "flypig". An entertainment
reporter from South China uses "milk pig" as her handle. If you browse
the Internet, you'll come across many who gladly take on the pot-bellied
swine as their identification. And these people belong to the cool
generation.

Yet, the same netizens rose up in angry protests when a scholar released
a study entitled "Chinese are the descendents of the pig". Huang Shouyu
uncovered a slew of totem images and concluded that primeval Chinese
worshipped the porcus omnivorous. (I'm trying to be pompous here.)

The reason? It was seen as intelligent, aggressive and virile. That was
before they were domesticated and bred for human consumption, of course.

The virility part actually seeped into the Chinese zodiac. Just witness
the boomlet of piglets this year and imagine all the overcrowded
classrooms a decade from now, and you'll understand why people love to
pop into this world when all the pigs are lined up.

Contrary to the scholar's interpretation, children born in the Year of
the Boar are believed to be easy going, sincere, tolerant, honest and
naive. Does that sound implausible? Well, think of it, these traits could
be a positive spin of lazy, fat and filthy.

But I digress. Professor Huang antagonized the online public because they
grew up with "We're descendents of the dragon" honed into the psyche.
Huang contends that it dates back only 30 years, when two pop jingles
from Hong Kong and Taiwan popularized the myth of the dragon.

Honestly, I did not read through his thesis, which is long and filled
with archaic terms and citations. I just feel that the dragon is so cool
and, even though it has slayers chasing on its tail, it will never be
someone's bacon, which, I guess, is a bigger fear than being accused of
bad smell. On top of it, dragons fly regularly, and probably don't
require a passport and a visa, while pigs fly, well, when pigs fly.

I wonder if the pig will ever rise in stature to rival the dragon.
Perhaps when some of the pig-named young are crowned with celebrity halo,
they'll call themselves "Li Little Pig" or "Becoming Pig" to offset the
legacy of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

In the meanwhile, the pig will be a polarizing figure, somewhat like
Hillary Clinton, who by chance was born in a Year of the Pig.

Learning Chinese - James Brown's partner says goodbye again

ENTERTAINMENT / Music

James Brown's partner says goodbye again

(AP)
Updated: 2007-03-03 09:05

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Tomi Rae Hynie, who claims to be James Brown's fourth
wife, says she stood in front of his open casket and mourned one more
time before DNA samples were taken from the late soul singer's body.

Lawyers for Brown's trustees wanted DNA samples to help sort out several
paternity claims made against the singer since he died Dec. 25 at age 73.
His body is being held at an undisclosed location.

Hynie told The Associated Press that she viewed Brown on Thursday. The
visit was the intimate farewell she didn't get during two funeral
services in December.

"We had a saying that his father, Papa Joe, used to say when he would win
playing dice. He would say, `Us win' to James," Hynie said Friday. "So, I
was praying and I said, `Us win, baby. We are going to put you in the
ground and you're going to get some rest finally, at last.'"

Hynie refused to say when or where Brown would be buried, but said it was
something she "had been fighting for all along."

"I'm very happy we're coming to a resolution with the family on that,"
she said. "He was my life ... and I miss him very much."

A few of Brown's children and a funeral director also viewed Brown on
Thursday before the court-ordered DNA samples were collected.

Hynie wouldn't say whether a paternity test will be needed for her son,
who wasn't included in Brown's will. Attorneys who handled the will told
the AP the child may be entitled to some of the estate, but a paternity
test would be needed.

Attorneys for the singer have said Brown and Hynie weren't legally
married when he died because she was married to another man when they
said their vows.

His children are in charge of his burial, Brown attorney and trustee
Buddy Dallas said. "If I had a say in it, it would have already been
done," Dallas said.

A telephone message for David Yount, an attorney for Brown's children,
wasn't immediately returned Friday.

Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Ga., said
he was ready to bury his friend.

"It needs to be done and that way it will put everything to rest
hopefully," said Reid, who handled Brown's funeral.

New Year dinner in other places

To have family reunion dinner on Lunar New Year's Eve in other places is
to become a fashion among Shanghai citizens this year. More private
enterprises and ordinary families in Shanghai also plan to celebrate
Lunar New Year's Eve outside Shanghai this year, which they think may
create a unique atmosphere.

Xu Feng, a white collar working in a large foreign-invested company in
Shanghai, revealed that her boss intended to give the company's Lunar New
Year's Eve dinner in Singapore. She said that her relatives could also
have opportunities to enjoy this dinner.

Twenty-six-year-old Yao Qian who works for the same company has a
different plan. She hopes to enjoy her family reunion dinner in the
countryside with her grandmother. She believes such dinner will be more
meaningful.

Shanghai's restaurants also promote their characteristic snacks rather
than the usual pork or fish as the main dish for the Spring Festival
feasts. Wu Liang and his wife will enjoy vinegar-pepper soup, because
they will visit Chongqing, and such soup is one of the most renowned
dishes there. Liu Yan, a student from Shanghai, also revealed her plan to
our reporter. She said that she would enjoy the fish balls of Fuzhou,
Fujian Province on Lunar New Year's Eve.

With Valentine's Day approaching, singles in Hong Kong can't stand the
idea of celebrating the festival alone. So, many are now turning to speed
dating activities to find that special someone.

Up until today, over 2400 single people in Hong Kong have singed up to
speed dating parties, to be held this Valentine's Day.

Entering the Hong Kong market in 2002, speed dating services have become
the first choice for local singles who want to multiply their chances of
meeting their Mr. or Mrs. Right. Source from the local newspaper Ming Pao
says that every year, there are 65,000 young people taking part in the
speed dating parties held by 30 agencies, bringing the industry a yearly
income of 20 million HKD.

Speed dating companies organize parties, dancing classes and many other
activities in romantic cafes or clubs to help single young people pair
off. In addition, they also provide such services as helping the clients
to improve their personal style and dress sense, to increase their chance
of finding love.

Statistics from the government of the Hong Kong SAR show that there are
2.6 million single people aged between 20 and 44 in Hong Kong. Many
professional workers like engineers, teachers and healthcare workers are
forced to stay single because of their long working hours and humdrum
lifestyle.

A new way to buy film ticket

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-01-26 09:42

Recently www.wangpiao.com.cn, a new website selling movie tickets, was
launched. People who want to watch films don't have to go to the cinema
or wait in queues to buy tickets themselves. Now the website service is
available in four cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Wuhan.

How to buy tickets? First, log on the website, fill in your name and
password, then choose the cinema you'd like to go to and pick the time
and seat you prefer. After you decide, you may choose the way you want to
receive the ticket, either by email or short message service. You can pay
online (most banks in China offer online payment services). When you
finish, the ticket will be sent to your email box or mobile phone with
all the necessary information.

People in Beijing and Guangzhou can even buy tickets with their mobile
phones.

You'll find an automatic machine in most cinemas.. If you have printed
out your ticket from the Internet, just scan the code number of the
ticket through the machine and it will print a real ticket that you can
use to enter the cinema. You can also scan the message sent to your
mobile phone to claim your ticket. If that doesn't work, just manually
input the serial number of the ticket into the machine.
Now, you'll get 10 per cent off if you buy tickets on this website.

The tickets are non-refundable and unchangeable once purchased.

Chinese Character - Will Starbucks move from the Forbidden City?

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Will Starbucks move from the Forbidden City?

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-01-17 16:42

The Palace Museum made its first response to the public on Tuesday about
the Starbucks outlet at the venue. It said a decision about whether the
Starbucks outlet will be removed from the attraction will be made no
later than June. Negotiations are now in progress, Beijing Morning Post
reports.

Early this week, a blog by China Central Television host Rui Chenggang
aroused a wide-ranging dispute six years after Starbucks first opened an
outlet in the Forbidden City.

In his article, Rui Chenggang stated the Starbucks at Forbidden City is a
joke among western tycoons. He urges the Starbucks chairman and CEO to
get the cafe out of the Forbidden City.

However, Starbucks CEO Jim Donald replied to Rui Chenggang, saying the
company has always cooperated to respect and preserve Chinese cultural
heritage while doing business there. In fact, it was the Chinese side
that invited the chain to open a shop in the Forbidden City initially.

Palace Museum spokesman Feng Naien emphasized that allowing Starbucks to
do business in the Forbidden City is not for profit, but meet consumer
demands.

"Negotiations are in progress for a solution," Feng Naien told the
Beijing Morning Post reporter. They have not disregarded public voices
concerning the Starbucks outlet in the Forbidden City. The result will be
determined within the first half of this year.

Starbucks is not the only American business facing a dilemma in the
Chinese market. During the Chinese Political Consultative Conference in
2000, Beijing CPPCC member Ma Yutian said foreign fast-food restaurants
run counter to the imperial garden style. Three years later, in 2003,
Kentucky Fried Chicken ceased its 10-year business in the imperial Beihai
Park.

An aviation company in Harbin has started helicopters rental service
recently. Thus it is possible for one to take a ride in a helicopter to
go skiing there.

The helicopters for rent include Y-12, Z-9A and AS350B2. The price varies
from 15,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan per hour depending on different models of
the aircraft.

Though the price is beyond the reach of most of the ordinary citizens,
the company promises that certain discounts will be given to frequent
clients and those who will fly a long-distance journey.

"Though our service is expensive, it has the convenience of flying to
anywhere within Heilongjiang at any time as the client wishes. Trip
around China is also possible, given that the client hands in an
application to the Civil Aviation Administration beforehand, " said Wang
Enli, the director of the marketing department of the company.

HSK Exam - Spike Lee to direct James Brown biopic

Spike Lee to direct James Brown biopic

LOS ANGELES - The late "Godfather of Soul" James Brown will rise again,
on screen. Spike Lee has signed on to direct a feature film about the
singer produced by Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment, Paramount
Pictures announced Wednesday.

"It's an authorized biography done with the cooperation of Mr. Brown
before his passing," Paramount spokeswoman Nancy Kirkpatrick said without
further comment.

Lee will rewrite a draft by Jezz and John Henry Butterworth, the trade
paper Daily Variety reported Wednesday. The script has been through
several drafts since Steve Baigelman wrote the original. The movie could
be in production by late 2007, Variety said.

"Having known him well, and after spending lots of time with him and
researching his life, it's somehow not surprising that he died on
Christmas Day. He was the ultimate showman, all the way to the end,"
Grazer told Variety on Tuesday.

Grazer did not immediately return messages left by The Associated Press
at his Los Angeles office.

Brown, whose legendary brand of soul and funk influenced hip-hop, disco
and rap, died of congestive heart failure on Christmas morning in Atlanta
at age 73.

Beijing 120 recruits foreign language volunteers

(CRI)
Updated: 2006-12-13 10:10

The Beijing 120 emergency medical center is looking for volunteers who
can speak foreign languages to serve as emergency operators during the
2008 Beijing Games.

Beijing Youth Daily reports the volunteers will help answer the emergency
calls under doctors' supervision. The volunteers must have a good command
of one or more foreign languages, especially less popular languages. They
are required to serve at least four hours per month and more 100 hours
per year.

An official from the center says their research has found around 10,000
foreign athletes and visitors received emergency treatment during the
2004 Athens Olympics. More than 80 people were hospitalized.

Volunteer recruitment has started on December 11. To apply, interested
parties can dial the 120 emergency center's recruitment hotline on
010-6609 8203, 010-6601 6101, or the China Youth Daily hotline on
010-6590 2008.
