How is the situation with computer viruses within the chinese internet system? Just wondering
about anit-virus software to purchase. Will something like "`Norton" work in China?
The reason I ask is that while on several chinese sites my computer was attacked. Norton 2006
protected my computer. Also, I am aware of a virus that spreads via through messenger software.
eg; MSN messenger. Any computer wizs out there with advise?
Much appreciated.

Yes, Norton works in China.

It's a good idea to use Firefox as default web browser instead of the Internet Explorer. It also
comes with a convenient popup blocker that works most of the time.

A bunch of my Indonesian friends today got an MSN virus.

I'm not sure how it started, but one person's computer got the virus (or trojan; I work in IT but
never really bothered learning the correct terminology for this kind of stuff, having never had a
virus ever) and it then used his MSN to send a message to all his contacts.

Something like "look at this site!" followed by a dodgy URL. Now all his friends have the virus.
They're all currently very busy booting into safe mode and running the latest version of Norton.

I just became aware of the MSN virus a few days ago. It's an insidious thing. That's why I asked
the question. My gals computer in China just got slammed with it. Now it's a 4000 RMB. paperwieght.
